New security features have been added to macOS Catalina (10.15) that require additional permissions for using the full feature set of the GoToAssist Expert desktop applications for Windows and Mac and/or RescueAssist. In order to remotely control your customer's Mac running macOS Catalina, the steps below must be performed on the customer's Mac.
Setting Up Unattended Support on Desktop
Unattended support can be set up by adding the device to the Devices list during a Remote Control session, or by installing the GoToAssist Remote Support application on the device.
- The GoToAssist Customer Attended Standalone application is a single executable (.exe) file that can be downloaded and used by customers who frequently join attended support sessions from their Windows computer. For more information, please see the GoToAssist Remote Support Customer Quick Start Guides for Windows and Mac.
- The GoToAssist Customer Attended Standalone application is available as a single installer file that can be downloaded and used by customers who frequently join attended support sessions from their Windows or Mac computer. Using the GoToAssist Customer Attended application can make joining attended support sessions easier than ever before.
- Keep customers and remote employees on-the-move with a remote support experience that’s better for both agents and end users alike. With GoToAssist, it’s easier to resolve issues fast and without frustration, to get customers and employees back to doing what matters.
The availability of the unattended support features depends on an account-level setting in the GoToAssist Remote Support Administration Center.
Note: The maximum number of devices set up for unattended access per GoToAssist Remote Support v5 account is 10,000.
Set up while in an Attended Support Session
- This process requires the customer to be physically present at their computer during an active Remote Control session.
- You need to be in control of the customer's computer.
- If you are not in admin mode, you need to restart the GoToAssist Remote Support application as a system service.
- Setting up unattended access while in an attended support session is NOT available in case of Windows Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) connection to the remote computer.

- During an active Remote Control session, click Add Device on the Tool Bar. Remember: You need to be in control of the customer's computer to set up unattended access. For information about how to elevate a session to Remote Control, see Requesting Remote Control.
- Enter a name for the device that will represent it on your list of devices available for unattended support.
- Select the Device group to which you want to add the device.
- Click Add.The customer is prompted to grant permission for setting up unattended support on their computer. They need to click Allow Unattended Support, or the permission is automatically declined after nine seconds. The agent cannot control the customer's computer while the prompt for permission window is being displayed.
- Agent side
- The Add Device icon on the Tool Bar turns into the Device Added icon indicating that the customer's computer is now available on the Devices tab.
- Customer side
- The icon of the GoToAssist Remote Support application is displayed on the customer's system tray (Win) or Application menu (Mac).
Tip: On a Windows device already set up for unattended access, login credentials can be saved. See Storing Unattended Credentials (Windows only) for further details.
Tip:Agents can create desktop shortcuts for quick access to unattended devices. See Creating Desktop Shortcuts for Devices.
Set up from Customer's Computer
It is recommended that the user setting up unattended access is physically present at the computer during the setup process.
- On the customer's device, log in to the GoToAssist Remote Support v5 Agent Console at https://console.gotoassist.com/.
- Select the Devices tab.
- Select the correct Device Group (if groups have been created for the account). Tip: After the setup, the customer's device will be automatically added to the Device Group you selected.
- In the top-right corner of the console, click Download Unattended Installer, and select your platform (Windows or Mac). Tip: If you are running Windows, for a single installation use either the EXE or the MSI installer. The latter makes multiple installs possible too.
- When the download of the unattended installer is complete, open it on the customer's computer. Once the GoToAssist Remote Support application is installed, the application's icon is displayed on the system tray (Win) or Application menu (Mac).The device also appears in the selected Device Group on the Devices tab of the GoToAssist Remote Support v5 Agent Console.Tip:Agents can create desktop shortcuts for quick access to unattended devices. See Creating Desktop Shortcuts for Devices.

Set up on Multiple Computers (Windows only)
The Windows MSI installer makes it possible for system or domain administrators to set up unattended access on multiple domain machines simultaneously.
The article assumes you are familiar with and use built-in Windows software distribution methods such as Microsoft Group Policy Management.
Note: You can also use third-party software such as Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager or Prism Deploy.
- Choose an existing shared folder on a server in your network, or create a new folder.
- Save the Windows MSI installer to that folder. To get it:
- Log in to the GoToAssist Remote Support v5 Agent Console at https://console.gotoassist.com/.
- Select the Devices tab.
- In the top-right corner of the console, click DOWNLOAD UNATTENDED INSTALLER and select DOWNLOAD FOR WINDOWS (MSI).
- In the Microsoft Group Policy Management application set the permissions:

Per group - Create a group that includes only the computers on which you want to install unattended access.
- Create a new filter and add the group to it.
Note: Make sure to remove the default 'Authenticated Users' filter. - Optional: It is highly recommended to run a test installation of the .MSI file to verify its integrity.
- In the Microsoft Group Policy Management application create a new policy.
- Edit the new policy in the Group Policy Management Editor:
- In the left navigation panel, select Computer Configuration > Policies > Software Settings.
- Right-click Software Installation and select New > Package.
- Select the Windows MSI Installer that you copied to the shared folder and click Open.
- In the Deploy Software window, select Assigned and click OK.
The new package appears on the right panel of the Group Policy Management Editor. - Reboot one or more workstations to install the .MSI file.
You can also check the Programs and Features list to see if the GoToAssist Remote Support application was successfully installed.
Tip: If the application was not installed, check the Windows Event Viewer for errors.

How to prevent issues caused by GoToAssist scam?
What is GoToAssist scam?
GoToAssist (now called RescueAssist) is a legitimate remote support platform that is used mainly by customer support organizations and support teams, however, scammers also use this platform. In this case, they attempt to trick people into downloading and installing GoToAssist using a tech-support scam web page. This site implies that visitors' computers are infected with viruses and encourages them to use the aforementioned software to solve the problem/remove detected viruses. Most people do not visit these websites intentionally - they are redirected to them by potentially unwanted applications (PUAs).
According to this tech-support scam, the user's Mac computer (MacOs) is infected with three viruses: two malware infections and one phishing/spyware infection. It is stated that these malicious programs might put personal and banking information at risk. To remove malware, users are encouraged to download and install GoToAssist so that scammers can connect to their computers remotely and 'help' to remove detected malicious software. Typically, scammers perform fake scans and try to sell various computer protection packages, which usually cost in the of region of $200 and $1000. They might also attempt to install various PUAs (supposedly anti-virus/anti-spyware software) and encourage users to purchase them (pay for software activation). This particular scam page advertises an unwanted application called Cleanup My Mac. Note that tech-support scams should never be trusted, and the software advertised on them should never be downloaded or installed. Scammers might use programs such as GoToAssist to install other malware such as ransomware - these programs cause data and financial loss. If your browser opens a scam web page, the best option is to ignore the information included and close it.
Scam sites are opened by PUAs installed on browsers or operating systems, however, this is not the only problem that they cause. PUAs gather data and display ads. They collect IP addresses, addresses of opened pages, entered search queries, geolocations, and other information. Developers send the data to other parties (potentially, cyber criminals) who misuse it to generate revenue. Additionally, PUAs display unwanted ads (in the form of coupons, banners, surveys, pop-ups, etc.) - if clicked, these open malicious pages or even lead to download/installation of other PUAs.

GoToAssist is one of a number of programs that scammers try to trick people into installing through scam sites. Another example is TeamViewer. Typically, these scam pages display virus alerts to trick visitors into believing that their computers are infected with a malicious program. To remove the programs, they are encouraged to download and install (or even purchase) certain software. Their main goal is to extort money from unsuspecting people. Examples of similar scam pages are apple.com-scan-mac[.]live, 'We Detected Unwanted Pop-Ups on Your Mac', and apple.com-shield-devices[.]live. In most cases, these sites are opened by PUAs, which are advertised as 'useful' and 'legitimate'. In fact, they open scam sites (and others), display ads, and gather information.
How did potentially unwanted applications install on my computer?
People often download and install PUAs through intrusive ads or together with regular software. They are often tricked into these unwanted downloads or installations when software developers use a marketing called 'bundling' - they include PUAs into download or installation set-ups of other programs. Information relating to this additional software is usually hidden in 'Custom', 'Advanced' and other similar parts of the set-ups. Furthermore, many people download/install programs without checking the available options, or they click intrusive ads - this causes unwanted downloads and installations.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
Download your files and programs using official websites and direct download links. Channels such as third party downloaders, dubious, unofficial websites, Peer-to-Peer networks (and other similar sources) should not be trusted. Do not install programs using third party installers. Furthermore, all downloads and installations should be performed properly. If a setup includes 'Custom', 'Advanced', and other settings, ensure that you check them (they often contain offers to download and install unwanted programs). Any such offers should be dismissed before completing the download or installation. It is not safe to click intrusive ads, especially if they are displayed on dubious websites. They can open other, potentially malicious pages or lead to unwanted downloads and installations. Typically, browsers display ads and open dubious pages when there are unwanted apps installed on them. To prevent this situation, uninstall unwanted, suspicious extensions, plug-ins, and add-ons. Also remove any unknown or unwanted programs installed on the operating system.
